Unfortunate injuries and goal scoring opportunities resulted in a strong performing Australian team being relegated back to Division II Group A in 2013.
The injuries started with Tommy Powell sustaining a knee injury from a deliberate clip, after scoring two goals and leaving the ice early in the third in the Aussies first game of the championship against Team Korea. The Korean served only a two minute minor for the infraction. Powell remained out for the remainder of the championship. Goaltender Olivier Martin was next after playing his only game against the Netherlands in which he sustained a minor tear to his meniscus in his knee. Nathan Walker was next after sustaining a minor knee injury in Australia’s 4th game against Poland.
Despite the injuries, Australia was able to produce a sound performance against all teams in the competition of which 3 of the 5 were only a 2 goal difference. However, to remain in the division the Aussies had to record a 2-goal difference against Romania in their final game.
The Aussies shook up their line combinations to fill the voids left by Powell & Walker. The Romanians struck first early in the first with Zsocs finding the net for the game’s first goal. Australia replied with Scotty Stephenson combining with Oddy & Schlamp to tie the game at 1 - 1. Zsocs scored his second to give the Romanians their second lead in the game. Aussie’s Todd Stephenson scored on a power play opportunity with assists from Lliam Webster and Josh Harding ending the period at 2 – 2.
The Aussies failed to capitalise on numerous power play opportunities in the second period. A minor penalty late in the period for boarding to Aussie’s Lliam Webster gave the Romanians a 3 – 2 lead for the second period’s only goal.
Romania scored their 4th with 8 minutes remaining in the game to take a 4 – 2 lead. The Aussies replied 20 seconds later when Scotty Stephenson scored his second for the game to narrow the lead 4 – 3 and renewed hope for the Aussies. An unfortunate turnover seconds later put the game out of hand with Romania scoring their 5th of the game and the Aussies taking a 2 minute minor. Shots on goal were 28 for Romania and 25 for Australia.
Despite Team Australia’s relegation, they have confirmed they are a rising Division I team. With healthy players for the duration of the championship and Australia’s wide ranging player development programs, the team will be back in serious contention in 2014.
